Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Despite potential roadblocks, GMO labeling set to go into effect on Friday
VTDigger.com - 6/30/2016.
By Mike Polhamus - With Vermont’s GMO labeling law set to go into effect Friday, manufacturers and retailers still don’t know exactly how or whether they will have to comply.
As Historic Vermont Legislation Goes into Effect, Congress May Pull GMO Labels Off of Grocery Shelves
Common Dreams - 6/30/2016.
Statement by Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch - Tomorrow, Vermont’s historic GMO labeling law goes into effect. This is the first law enacted in the U.S. that would provide clear labels identifying food made with genetically engineered ingredients. Indeed, stores across the country are already stocking food with clear on-package labels thanks to the Vermont law, because it’s much easier for a company to provide GMO labels on all of the products in its supply chain than just the ones going to one state. But this victory may be fleeting. The Senate will vote next week on a federal bill that would nullify Vermont’s law, and other state labeling efforts percolating, thanks to the heavy hand the ag-biotech industry wields over our congressional representatives.
Sanders to Put Hold on GMO Labeling Legislation
The Cornucopia Institute - 6/29/2016.
By Bernie Sanders - On Friday, Vermont will become the first state in the nation to require GMO labeling. This is a triumph for ordinary Americans over the powerful interests of Monsanto and other multi-national food industry corporations. We cannot allow Vermont’s law to be overturned by bad federal legislation that has just been announced. I will do everything I can to defeat this bill, beginning by putting a hold on it in the Senate.
At ‘Crucial Moment’ For GMO Labeling, Organic Industry Finds Itself Divided
Huffington Post - 6/29/2016.
By Carey Gillam - The blame-game was in full swing this week in the aftermath of the GMO labeling deal announced by U.S. Sens. Pat Roberts and Debbie Stabenow as embittered organic, consumer and environmentalist groups who want mandatory labeling struggled for a cohesive strategy to oppose the deal many have dubbed a “dream” for the food and biotech agriculture industries but a disaster for consumers.
